As we are navigating these changing times, we wanted to share a few ways to keep our spirits up and assist our mental health through it. While this situation we are in is no laughing matter, and the seriousness of the impact it is having on our lives is very real, taking some time to find lightness and joy in our day can do wonders for our mental state and for the emotional well-being of the people around us.
Laughter makes you feel good which lasts even after the laughter is done. Humour helps you keep a positive, optimistic outlook through difficult situations, disappointments, and loss. It allows a break from the sadness and pain, and it give you courage to keep going.
Even in the most difficult of times, a laugh–or even simply a smile–can go a long way toward making you feel better.
Here are a few scientific reasons why it is amazing to laugh:
~ Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, which is the bodies natural HAPPY chemical. 😁
~It relaxes your body, relieves physical tension and stress. 🌿
~Laughter boosts your immune system as it decreases the stress hormones and increases the infection fighting and immune cells. 💪
~It burns calories, one study found that laughing for 10 to 15 minutes a day can burn approximately 40 calories—which could be enough to lose one or two kilograms over the course of a year. Every bit counts. 🤣
~Helps you live longer! A study in Norway found that people with a strong sense of humour outlived those who don’t laugh as much. The difference was particularly notable for those battling cancer.⏰
Ideas to get you started:
Smile. Smiling is the beginning of laughter, and like laughter, it’s contagious. Notice the effect on others when you flash them a glimpse of your teeth.
Count your blessings. Literally make a list. The simple act of considering the positive aspects of your life will distance you from negative thoughts.
Watch light hearted, funny comedy TV shows and movies. Watch classic childhood movies, comedy movies, cartoons and hilarious TV shows like Friends, Seinfeld or the upcoming comedy festival on channel 10. Spend time virtually with fun, playful people. We all have that person who always cheers us up when we speak to them. Call them, video-chat with them. Laugh together.
Now we ask you: “What’s the funniest thing that happened to you today? This week? In your life?
